Golf

With 64 private and 43 public courses, golf on Long Island can be played year-round.

Shinnecock Hills, located in the Shinnecock Reservation is one of the nation's oldest private courses. Two U.S. Open tournaments have taken place here, with a third planned for 1995.

With five courses, Bethpage State Park is one of the nation's largest public golf complexes. Its Black course is consistently ranked as one of America's top 25 public golf courses.

Although a large percentage of the courses are private, the public courses offer more than enough challenge. Residents may bring nonresident guests to most county and town courses. Long waiting times for tee-off are the norm on summer weekends, while those playing on weekdays encounter minimal waits.
